PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a separator superior in safety; and an electrochemical device which has the separator and is superior in safety.SOLUTION: A separator for an electrochemical device comprises: a fine porous first separator layer 10 which mainly includes a thermoplastic resin, and performs a shutdown at a predetermined temperature; a thermally-resistant fine porous second separator layer 20; and a fine porous third separator layer 30 which includes a low-melting point material having a lower melting point than that of the thermoplastic resin of the first separator layer, and which performs a shutdown at a lower temperature than each shutdown temperature of the first separator layer. The low-melting point material of the third separator layer is 5-100000 mPa s in melt viscosity at 140°C.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
