PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat assisted magnetic recording device located in a data storage system including a laser, which calibrates changes in laser efficiency and changes in flying height caused by variations in temperature so as to achieve optimum drive performance.SOLUTION: A method includes the steps of: setting a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) device to an operating temperature; and determining a threshold current and an optimal laser current and storing the threshold laser current and the optimal laser current in memory. The step of determining the threshold laser current, the step of determining the optimal laser current and the step of storing the threshold laser current and the optimal laser current in a calibration table are repeatedly performed until acceptable device performance is achieved at more than one operating temperature.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4 |
