The present disclosure pertains to a device and a method for processing an image such that images can be reproduced with qualities which make it appear as if the real subject were there. A reflection characteristic estimation part analyzes estimates of, for example, reflection characteristics of a photographic subject, as characteristics of the photographic subject from a supplied input image. The reflection characteristic estimation part supplies, as image estimation information, a specular reflection component resulting from the reflection characteristic estimation to a characteristic information integration unit as well as to a highlight region detection part. The highlight region detection part, by using the specular reflection component which is the reflection characteristic estimation result from the reflection characteristic estimation part, performs highlight region detection in parallel with the processing by the reflection characteristic estimation part and supplies the highlight detection result to a characteristic information integration unit as image estimation information. The present disclosure can be applied, for example, to an image processing device. |
