<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the costs of related consumables from being generated by not performing an actual printing process when information for the printing environment is collected. <P>SOLUTION: This printer collects information regarding the printing environment, and has a selecting means which selects whether a normal printing process is performed or not at the same time with the information collection during an information collecting mode, and a means which switches printing and pseudo printing in response to the result selected by the selecting means.
