<p>A starting block device for use on a surface, in particular an ice floor is provided. The starting block device comprises a suction cup adapted to releasably and securely engage the surface when evacuated, the suction cup being configured to be connected to a pump for evacuating the suction cup. The starting block comprises a stop structure fixed to the suction cup adapted to engage a skate, in particular the blade of the skate, standing on the surface, the engagement being in a direction parallel to the surface along a longitudinal side of the skate.
