In order to control the power consumption of consumers connected to an alternating current network, said consumers particularly comprising gas discharge lamps, in an easy and cost-effective manner, the invention provides a circuit arrangement (100) comprising a first and a second power switching unit (200, 300) and an inductor (190), wherein the power switching units are actuated by a controller (160) connected thereto in order to regulate the output voltage of the circuit arrangement (100) to a value of a reference alternating voltage that is synchronized with the input voltage, the amplitude of said reference alternating voltage being reduced relative to the amplitude of the supply voltage by an adjustable factor for controlling the power consumption of the consumers. The invention further provides a method for operating such a circuit arrangement, and a controller for use in such a circuit arrangement.
