An electrophoretic element according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a plurality of pixels and is provided with a first substrate and a second substrate that face each other and an electrophoretic layer between the first substrate and the second substrate. The electrophoretic layer in each pixel comprises a dispersion medium and a plurality of types of electrophoretic particles dispersed within the dispersion medium. The plurality of types of electrophoretic particles includes first electrophoretic particles and second electrophoretic particles that are charged with the same polarity and that have different threshold characteristics from each other. The electrophoretic element is provided with three or more electrodes to which potentials that differ from each other can be applied in each pixel. The three or more electrodes comprise a first electrode, a second electrode, and a third electrode arranged in order along a direction that is parallel to the substrate surface of the first substrate when viewed from the layer normal direction of the electrophoretic layer. The third electrode is provided to an opening region of each pixel. |
