A method for setting audio gain in a portable terminal is provided to implement a more enhanced sound quality by setting audio gain according to the coding scheme of a received voice signal. If an incoming call is detected(S100), a control part receives codec information from a base station including information about a coding scheme(S110). The control part sets audio gain according to the coding scheme contained in the received codec information(S120). Then the control part judges whether the user accepts the incoming call(S130). If the user accepts the incoming call, the control part makes a call connection with the other party through an allocated traffic channel(S140). In case codec information is received in the middle of telephone conversation(S150), the control part confirms whether codec information has been changed(S160). If so, the control part sets audio gain according to a changed coding scheme(S170).
