A power control method in a portable terminal is provided to prevent an unnecessary power consumption in a dual mode portable terminal by previously storing the base station information of each area, where a public land mobile network service and a WLAN(Wireless LAN) service are supported at the same time, and supplying power to a WLAN communication part if base station information, received when a communication request is made, is matched with stored base station information. If the user of a dual mode portable terminal makes a request to supply power to a WLAN communication part, a control part supplies power to the WLAN communication part(S101). Then, if it is confirmed that the present location of the portable terminal is a WLAN service area, the control part compares base station information, received through an RF communication part, with the base station information stored in a DB(S102,S103). In case the received base station information does not exist in the DB(S104), the control part stores the received base station information in the DB as public land mobile network base station information(S105).
