PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform focus detection using a phase difference detection method properly even if a perspective conflict occurs in a subject.SOLUTION: A focus detection device 204 calculates a detection amount which is either one of a phase difference in a pair of image signals obtained from a focus detection area of an image pick-up device 201 imaging a subject image formed by a photographic optical system, and a defocus amount of the photographic optical system based on the phase difference. The device is provided with a plurality of first areas 1-9 in the focus detection area, and comprises: first calculation means 204 for calculating a detection amount for each of the first areas; reference setting means 213 for selecting a reference area 5 from the plurality of first areas and setting a detection amount of the reference area as reference detection amount; and second calculation means 213 for selecting, from among the plurality of first areas, the first areas the detection amount of which differs from the reference detection amount by a value smaller than a prescribed threshold, as second areas 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, while including the reference area, and for calculating a detection amount of the focus detection area using detection amounts of the plurality of second areas.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
