A process for precipitating metals, especially precious metals such as gold, on to metal oxide layers, comprises cathodic contacting to enable electrochemical reduction in an aqueous acidic solution. The amount of metal precipitated is determined by the degree of reduced chemical value of the metal. The metal particles precipitated on the oxide are dried under vacuum or in an inert gas.
