An illuminator (1) comprises a plurality of discharge lamps (10) having electrodes connected with a first common connection line (21) on one end side thereof, and electrodes connected with a second common connection line (22) on the other end side thereof. An inverter circuit (6) connected with the first common connection line (21) and applying an AC voltage to the first common connection line (21), and an inverter circuit (7) connected with the second common connection line (22) and applying an AC voltage having a frequency identical to that of the AC voltage applied to the first common connection line (21) and a reverse phase to the second common connection line (22) are also provided. Furthermore, a fault detection circuit (8) for detecting disconnection of the discharge lamp (10) based on the difference between the absolute values of a voltage level applied to the first common connection line (21) and a voltage level applied to the second common connection line (22) is provided.
