An imaging device comprising: an imaging element that includes some of a pixels in a plurality of pixels, the plurality of pixels output captured image signals and some of the pixels being used as a signal detection units that detect a signal based on a beam that passes through a pupil region of an imaging optical system that includes a focus lens, and wherein the signal detection units are arranged in two dimensions in a row direction and a column direction that is orthogonal to the row direction; a focusing determination unit that determines whether the focus lens is in a focused state based on correlation values between a detection signal group of a first signal detection unit group that includes the plurality of signal detection units arranged in the row direction and a detection signal group of a second signal detection unit group that includes the signal detection units arranged at the same distance in one direction that crosses the row direction with respect to each of the plurality of signal detection units that forms the first signal detection unit group, in a state where the focus lens is at an arbitrary position, and based on a predetermined threshold value; and a focusing control unit that moves the focus lens until it is determined by the focusing determination unit that the focus lens is in the focused state.
