The spreader has a spreader cone (3') driven into the pipe end by a cylindrical thrust element (3). The tool has two hand grips and the spreader cone is pressed into the pipe end and the handles pressed together to drive the cone. One handle (7) is rigidly attached to the body (1) of the tool while the other handle (9) has a hinged coupling and a geared drive (2,5) to generate the thrust on the cylinder. The operating handle is hinged by a transverse axis (6) in the end of the cylinder. A sloping rack (2) on the housing meshes with a gear segment (5) on the end of the handle to generate the thrust for the cylinder. Different sizes of cone can be fitted to operate on different pipe diameters.
