The sensor has a photodetector (16) positioned at the rear of an optical element (12) in the path of the incident solar radiation. The optical element is provided with selectively controlled areas having variable transmission characteristics. The optical element may be divided into at least two segments (13), with independently controlled transmission characteristics. There may be a matrix of independent segments arranged concentrically around a central segment.
