A brake device at least partly engages around the brake drum (2) and has a ring-shaped brake ring (3) with a brake lining (5) fixed on its inside. The brake ring is fixed by means of a fixture device (8). In the brake ring a slot (4) is formed. The brake ring has first and second, spaced apart free ends. The brake ring is made of an elastic material and is under tension in order to provide an air gap between the brake drum and the brake lining. The brake lining is fixed to the brake ring by fixture devices (6) leading through the ring and/or by projections (7) inwardly directed from the free ends of the ring. In the area of the free ends of the brake ring, a lever device is coupled for tensioning the brake lining against the brake drum.
