PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a period of time for displaying a map while utilizing a GPS function capable of obtaining locational information highly precisely. SOLUTION: This map display system includes a portable telephone 2 which receives radio waves (GPS radio waves) from a plurality of GPS satellites 1a-1c arranged in the sky and a server 5 which receives information from the plurality of GPS satellites 1a-1c, from this portable telephone 2 through base stations in communication, and information from a plurality of base stations 3a-3c and which performs positional measurement (positioning) of the portable telephone 2 based on each piece of information. The server 5 measures with two measuring parts, i.e., a simple measuring part 52 and a precise measuring part 54, downloading the entire map image by the positional information measured simply beforehand, downloading the map data for the difference from the positional information obtained subsequently by the precise measurement, and merging the two in the portable telephone 2 to provide highly precise locational information to the user in a short period of time.
