PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer wherein its property is not prohibited by a defect caused by a remaining catalyst or its successor product in a cleaning step after a reaction and it exhibits very good dispersion of a pigment, and a wide compatibility with a binder are attained in combination. SOLUTION: The copolymer comprises 3 segments having different densities from one another, wherein the content of an ionic monomer in each segment is 1-100 mol%, the 2nd and the 3rd segments contain an ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the proceeding segment. The copolymer can be produced by NMP or RAFT using a monofunctional initiator. The production process for the copolymer and its use as a dispersing agent are also disclosed.
