摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device and a projector that performs image processing adapted to &gamma; characteristics of an image by simple and low-cost constitution with high picture quality for image display of a double-modulation optical system wherein a digital drive modulating element having linear gray scale characteristics and an optical modulating element having nonlinear gray scale characteristics are arranged in series. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device is the double-modulation optical system comprising the first optical modulating element having linear gray scale characteristics and the second optical modulating element having nonlinear gray scale characteristics, and has a signal processing section which generates a first control signal for linearly controlling a luminance value corresponding to the gray scale degree of the first optical modulating element and outputs a second control signal for nonlinearly controlling a luminance value corresponding to the gray scale degree of the second optical modulating element so that the composite luminance value of light beams emitted by the first and second optical modulating elements has characteristics corresponding to &gamma; characteristics of an input image signal, and a first driver for controlling the first optical modulating element with the first control signal and a second driver for controlling the second optical modulating element with the second control signal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
