PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber, capable of improving reliability and ride comfort in a vehicle while adapting a structure for generating a damping force by using electromagnetic force of a motor. SOLUTION: The shock absorber comprises an actuator A including a motion covering mechanism H for converting linear motion to rotational motion and the motor M to which the rotational motion converted by the mechanism H is transmitted, the actuator being connected to a body-side member of the vehicle; a hydraulic damper E connected with an axle-side member of the vehicle, to which the linear motion of the actuator A is transmitted; a spring 53 energizing a piston 33 in a direction of extending the damper E; and a spring 54 stored within the damper E to energize the piston 33 in a direction of compressing the damper E.
