PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a glow plug and a common rail from a falling object, improve a cooling water passage in a cylinder head, and construct a diesel engine compact and short in a vertical direction in a common rail type diesel engine. SOLUTION: The diesel engine has a structure characterized by fitting the glow plug 3 in a lower side of a suction port 1a from a lower side of an intake manifold 2 connected to the cylinder head 1 including the cooling water passage b in an upper part thereof, and providing the common rail 5 below the glow plug 3. The diesel engine has a structure characterized by constructing a recessed part (a) below a side wall 2a of the intake manifold 2 and arranging the glow plug 3 at the concave part (a).
