PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device that converges quickly relative to a plurality of target luminances even if the accumulative lighting time of a light source is long, or a light source control method for the projection type display device.SOLUTION: A projection type display device 10 includes: a light source 11; a light source driving unit 12 that supplies light source driving power to the light source 11; a luminance detection unit that detects the detection luminance corresponding to the light output from the light source 11; a storage unit 19 that stores the light source characteristic representing the relation between the light source driving power and the accumulative lighting time including the accumulated time for which the light source 11 is lighted for every target luminance targeted when the light source 11 is lighted; and a control unit 20 that controls the light source driving unit 12 so that when the light source 11 is lighted, the difference between the detection luminance and the target luminance becomes smaller than a predetermined value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
