PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenitic stainless steel having a high sheared face ratio occupied in the blanked fracture and further enabling the prolongation of the service capable life of a die by controlling softening and the stabilizing degree of austenite. SOLUTION: This austenitic stainless steel has a composition containing <=0.060% (C+1/2N), <=1.0% Si, <=5% Mn, <=0.006% S, 15 to 20% Cr, 5 to 12% Ni, <=5% Cu and 0 to 3.0% Mo, and the balance substantially Fe, and in which the components are controlled so that the index Md30 of the amount of strain induced martensite to be formed defined by the following formula reaches -60 to -10. The increase in its Vickers hardness after cold rolling is preferably controlled to >=20%. Further, the grain size number prescribed in JIS G0551 in a state after finish annealing preferably lies in the range of 8 to 11: Md30=551-462(C+N)-9.2Si-29(Ni+Cu)-8.1Mn-13.7Cr-18.5Mo.
