The invention relates to a controller (1) of a frequency converter. In order to avoid compatibility problems the controller (1) of the frequency converter comprises a memory (4), in which control programs (11 to 14) of peripheral devices (101 to 103) connectable to the controller are stored; and a compatibility table (15); a check element (3), which by utilizing the memory (4) checks specifically for each peripheral device (101 to 103) whether a compatible control program is stored in a memory (9) of the peripheral device; and an update element (2), which, if need, be retrieves the control program (11 to 14) of the peripheral device from the memory (4) of the controller (1) and sends it to the peripheral device to be used if the control program (11 to 14) stored in the memory (4) is, on the basis of the hardware identifier and the compatibility table (15), compatible.
