<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element which has little fluctuation of an alignment angle with an optical axis of a refractive index and a substrate in a prescribed axial direction such as the width direction, can be easily manufactured at a low cost and has a retardation control layer. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing element 1 comprises at least one retardation control layer 3 and a polarizing film 2, wherein the retardation control layer 3 contains a lyotropic liquid crystalline compound which is vertically aligned or horizontally aligned with a precise alignment angle of >-1° and <+1° with respect to the substrate and the fast axis of the refractive index is vertical or parallel to the in-plane direction with an angle of >-1° and <+1° with respect to the polarizing transmission axis, or is parallel to the thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
