PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment method of a metallic material capable of controlling decarburization while heating the metallic material with high spatial uniformity.SOLUTION: A metallic material accommodated in a heat treatment furnace is heat treated by supplying atmosphere gas containing a fuel modifying gas G2 containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide obtained by reacting hydrocarbon and water and carbon dioxide into the heat furnace 10. It is preferable to further react carbon monoxide in the fuel modifying gas with water, produce carbon dioxide and mix in the atmosphere gas.
