PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state image pickup device which does not cause the deterioration of quality of an image when an impulse of a high voltage such as static electricity is impressed. SOLUTION: A light shielding film 4 covering the upper part of a transfer electrode 3 is not GND-grounded, and is brought into a completely floating state to make it floating in potential whereby electric charge is not be poured into a capacity between the transfer electrode 3 and the light shielding film 4, thereby preventing insulation breakdown. Accordingly, the waveform of a driving clock pulse supplied to the transfer electrode 3 does not become dull whereby the operation of a perpendicular transfer register 2 can be stabilized.
