PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pen-type optical reader which reduces the influence of external light and improves the S/N ratio, using a simple structure. SOLUTION: The pen-type optical reader 20 has a nearly rod-like main member 22, of which one end is provided with a light output/input section which makes a light irradiated on an inspection surface 8 and receives light from the inspection surface 8. A light-shielding member 40 is provided in the vicinity of one end of the main member 22. The light-shielding member 40 includes a light-shielding section 42, which extends radially outwardly from the main body member 22 to prevent light transmission.
