A device and a method for controlling a power source of a monitor are provided to automatically control power of the monitor by checking presence of a user in front of the monitor. A power supply unit(100) applies the power to the monitor. A user detection sensor(500) outputs a user detection signal by connecting to the power supply unit. A switch turns on/off the power of the user detection sensor by connecting to the user detection sensor and the power supply unit. A controller(300) switches the monitor to a power saving mode if the user is absent according to the signal applied from the user detection sensor. If the user is present according to the signal applied from the user detection sensor, the controller switches the monitor to a normal mode and makes the user detection sensor operated in a specific cycle by turning on/off the switch. An amplifier(510) amplifies and applies the signal output from the user detection sensor to the controller.
