A composition for treating and preventing liver disease comprising tanshinone I is provided to inhibit hepatocyte damage caused by jaundice, necrosis of hepatocyte by oxidative or nonoxidative stresses or apoptosis of hepatocyte by bile acid salt. The composition for treating and preventing liver disease comprises tanshinone I represented by the formula(I) as an effective ingredient, wherein the tanshinone I is isolated from Codonopsis pilosula NANNF.; the amount of tanshinone I is 0.1-50 wt.%; the composition is a pharmaceutical or health food composition; and the food composition is formulated as powder, granule, tablet, capsule or drink.
