The generator has a steam producer (10) connected with a supply line (22) for supplying cold water and with an empty line (26) for emptying the steam producer. A filling valve (25) is arranged in the supply line, and an empty valve (24) is arranged in the empty line. The filling valve and the empty valve are controlled by a control unit (29) in an impulse form. The control unit determines opening and closing times of the filling valve and/or the empty valve based on pressure of the supplied cold water. The supply line ends in an opening.
