RF DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM PROVIDING FIXED WIRELESS LOCAL LOOP SERVICE AND INCREASED ANTENNA FUNCTIONALITY

A system and method for transmitting a radio frequency (RF) signal in an RF bandwidth over a low bandwidth medium (60), e.g. in-building twisted pair cabling, which has a transmission bandwidth below the RF bandwidth. The system (50) has a receiver (52) for receiving the RF signal and a global reference oscillator (66) for distributing a global reference tone of high stability. Local oscillators (58, 86) are controlled by adjustment signals derived from the global reference tone to deliver reference tones of high stability required for mixing the RF signal to obtain an intermediate frequency (IF) signal which is fed through the low bandwidth medium (60). The global reference tone is preferably delivered through the same low bandwidth medium (60) to desired locations, such as remote coverage sites in a wireless local loop (WLL) service. Two of the four twisted pairs in a cable are sufficient to support bi-directional communication. The remaining twisted pairs may be used to control remote site antenna functions or to support other types of communication services, such as data LAN, video, wired voice, or other wireless services.
