<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a cartridge capable of detecting a new cartridge with a reliable method using an existing sensor. <P>SOLUTION: When a new waste toner box 17 is used, the light receiving quantities of sensors A, B change as a shading tape 54 is displaced from an initial position to an end position. When the detected values of the sensors A, B are ones corresponding to changes of the light receiving quantities by displacement of the shading tape 54, it is determined that the waste toner box 17 being a new one. By constructing in such a manner, the structure can be made simple for determining whether or not the waste toner box 17 is a new one using the sensors A, B for detecting the quantity of accommodation.
