PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device capable of restraining a characteristic or the like from being deteriorated, by regulating properly switching between an initial operation before electric power reaches a rated value and an ordinary operation after the electric power reaches the rated value, and to provide a projector built in with the same. SOLUTION: A controller 70b carries out an operating condition selected from the plurality of operating conditions, in response to a determination result of state classification of an arc tube 1, in concretely saying, sets a value of a current supplied to the arc tube 1 to a value suitable for a state of the arc tube 1, to carry out the initial operation for starting-up and leading-up (steps S14, S15), and then sets a chopping wave rise-up rate of a waveform superposed with a chopping wave on a rectangular wave supplied to the arc tube 1, to a value suitable for the state of the arc tube 1, to carry out the ordinary operation (step S16), and the proper operation is thereby secured in response to the state classification of the arc tube 1. A light-emitting state of the arc tube 1 is maintained in a satisfactory state of reduced flickering or the like for a long period, and a service life of the arc tube 1 is prolonged, by this manner.
