PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a proper focus evaluation value and select an image focused to a desired area, regarding an image capturing apparatus having a function to select the image focused to the desired area out of a plurality of images captured while varying a focal length. SOLUTION: After capturing the predetermined number of images while varying the focal length (S1 to S5), an area to be focused is predetermined (S6). The position of the area is corrected using the shift between the images based on the shift between the images and focal length information on the respective images, thereafter, the AF evaluation value of the area is obtained by using a set filter (S8 to S12). If the reliability of the evaluation value is insufficient (S13: No), the filter is reset to a filter having lower frequency band (step S14), then, the steps S9 to S12 are performed. If the reliability is sufficient (S13: Yes), the loop is finished.
