PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an appropriate switch between a drive for charging monitor and drive for charging accumulation with influence on signals around subjects reduced.SOLUTION: A focus detection device comprises: a sensor unit which includes a sensor including a plurality of pixels and composed of the pixels, and in which a photoelectric conversion unit generating an electric charge in accordance with incident light, and a holding part holding the electric charge transferred from the photoelectric conversion unit are provided in each of the plurality of pixels; control means that switches a mode to any of a first mode of transferring the electric charge generated in the photoelectric conversion unit to the holding part to accumulate the transferred electric charge, and a second mode of accumulating the electric charge generated in the photoelectric conversion unit in the photoelectric conversion unit to control the electric charge accumulation in the sensor; and calculation means that uses an image signal based on the accumulated electric charge in any of the first mode and second mode to calculate an amount of defocus.
