The present invention provides a new zeolite catalyst for the preparation of dimethyl amine (DMA) by the reaction of methanol and/or a methylamine mixture with ammonia, which solves the problems involved in a conventional catalyst resulting from sharply declined DMA selectivity as methanol conversion reaches 95% or higher, to exhibit a higher DMA selectivity, lower trimethylamine selectivity and higher methanol-depleting reaction activity. <??>The process of the present invention prepares dimethylamine by a vapor-phase reaction of methanol and/or a methylamine mixture with ammonia in the presence of an improved zeolite catalyst prepared by treating a zeolite with a solution dissolving an organophosphorus compound.
