<p>The invention provides a modular armored vehicle system comprising an armored combat vehicle chassis (2) having a plurality of openings and a plurality of composite armor plates (4) for absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy from high velocity, armor-piercing projectiles (12), each of the plates (4) being adapted for attachment to the chassis (2) and sized to cover at least one of the openings wherein each of the plates comprises a single layer of bodies (6) which are directly bound and retained in plate form by a solidified material (7) wherein a majority of each of the bodies (6) is in direct contact with at least four adjacent bodies (6), wherein the solidified material (7) and the plate (4) are elastic and wherein the bodies (6) have a specific gravity of at least 2.4 and are made of a ceramic material. <IMAGE></p> |
