PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector which detects whether a carrying means is mounted in another device or not by a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A detection part 7 detects a voltage applied to a variable resistance 6, and a paper width is obtained on the basis of the voltage detected by the detection part 7, and a discrimination part 8 discriminates an attachment/detachment state of an automatic document feeder 3 to a device main body 2 on the basis of the voltage detected by the detection part 7, whereby the attachment/detachment state of the automatic document feeder 3 is discriminated using an existing configuration for detecting a paper width.
