PURPOSE: A device and a method for reducing fuel consumption are provided to improve fuel efficiency by transferring a virtual output signal, which contains fuel saving control data, to an Electronic Control Unit of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A device for reducing fuel consumption comprises a switch input unit(110), a sensor signal input unit(120), an ECU(130), a virtual signal unit, and a fuel mode switching unit(190). The switch input unit selects between a fuel reduction mode and a normal operation mode. The sensor signal input unit switches between an analog input signal and a digital sensor signal. The ECU checks the digital sensor signal several times at uniform intervals and creates virtual output data. The virtual signal unit switches the virtual output data to a virtual output signal. The fuel mode switching unit provides the selected mode signal to the ECU.
