PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the production of a fatty acid alkyl ester with high efficiency and in high yield by maintaining catalyst activity to prevent a reduction in the reaction rate in the final reaction stage, and by suppressing an increase of by-products such as methoxypropanediol and the like produced by the reaction of glycerin with a lower alcohol. SOLUTION: In the method, the fatty acid alkyl ester is produced by using an oil and fat and a lower alcohol having 1-5 carbon atoms as the reaction raw materials and a solid catalyst, and the reaction is conducted in such a way that the raw materials and reaction product take the form of a single liquid phase in the reaction system where the conversion of the oil and fat is 50% by mole or above or that the raw materials and reaction product take the form of a single liquid phase in the reaction system in a step where the conversion of the oil and fat is highest.
