PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality detection device for a moving handrail of a passenger conveyor that can securely detect travel state abnormality of a moving handrail without reference to a state of environmental temperature at the periphery of the moving handrail, and the passenger conveyor.SOLUTION: A abnormality detection device includes: a first temperature sensor 21 which measures the temperature of a high heat generation place A on the path of a moving handrail 8; a second temperature sensor 22 which measures the temperature of a low heat generation place B on the path of the moving handrail; and an abnormality detection part 23 which detects abnormality of the moving handrail based upon the temperature difference between the temperature measured by the first temperature sensor and the temperature measured by the second temperature sensor during a travel of the moving handrail.
