PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is made compact without causing failure such as the extension of a paper conveying path even when a plurality of image forming parts are arranged on a line nearly in a horizontal direction. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a primary transfer belt 6 being a first intermediate transfer body above the spot of a resist roller 5. It is equipped with four image forming parts 7 which form different color toner images on the upper surface of the primary transfer belt 6, and primarily transfer them to the primary transfer belt 6 on a line in the rotating direction of the belt. It is equipped with a secondary transfer belt 9 being a second intermediate transfer body to which the toner image on the surface of the primary transfer belt 6 is secondarily transferred between the paper conveying path and the primary transfer belt 6 below the primary transfer belt 6. It is equipped with a tertiary transfer part 11 at a spot where the secondary transfer belt 9 straddles over the paper conveying path. Thus, the primary transfer belt 6 is arranged at a spot somewhat separate from the paper conveying path, and a fixing part 13 and the tertiary transfer part 11 are made to come close to each other.
