PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a simple and portable device capable of performing precise state detection of a plant in real time, and ignoring a measurement error caused by a change of a refractive index resulting from temperature fluctuation; to change a part into which an optical fiber probe is inserted; and to measure saccharinity of a local portion of the plant. SOLUTION: This device has a structure wherein light emitted from a single light source is guided to the optical fiber probe in the state where the optical fiber probe is directly inserted into the plant or brought into contact therewith, and reflected light returned from a tip part of the optical fiber is detected by a photodetector, to thereby monitor the plant state precisely. Furthermore, a measurement error caused by a temperature change is removed by comparing with a measured value in water or in the air. A wavelength used for measurement preferably has an absorbance (absorption amount) of 10% or less. Since the reflected return light can be monitored at any time by using this method, the plant state can be detected in real time, and a plant environment can be controlled with an accuracy unattainable hitherto.
