The present invention provides a color filter that makes a liquid crystal display satisfactorily reproduce halftone color by effectively reducing color shift that occurs when the color on the liquid crystal display is changed stepwise from white to black, and a liquid crystal display comprising the color filter. A color filter 10 comprises red, green, and blue color patterns 10 R, 10 G, 10 B corresponding to the display areas that the respective pixels in a liquid crystal driving cell 20 form. In the color filter 10 , the contrasts of the red, green, and blue color patterns 10 R, 10 G, 10 B (the individual contrasts of the color patterns) are preferably in the following relationship. Specifically, it is preferred that the contrast C<SUB>R </SUB>of the red color pattern 10 R, the contrast C<SUB>G </SUB>of the green color pattern 10 G, and the contrast C<SUB>B </SUB>of the blue color pattern 10 B fulfill the relationship C<SUB>R</SUB><C<SUB>G</SUB><C<SUB>B</SUB>, as well as the relationship C<SUB>R</SUB>:C<SUB>G</SUB>=1.0:1.2 to 1.0:2.5, and C<SUB>R</SUB>:C<SUB>B</SUB>=1.0:1.5 to 1.0:4.5. The C<SUB>R </SUB>is preferably 700 or more.
