In order to increase the detection accuracy of magnetism from a medium, an identification unit (13) is provided with: a magnetism detection unit (26) for detecting the magnetic characteristics of transported paper money; a plurality of transport rollers (31, 37) for transporting the paper money, and positioned so as to sandwich the magnetic detection unit (26) therebetween in the paper money transport direction; tension rollers (33, 39) for sandwiching the paper money therebetween and transporting the paper money between the transport rollers (31, 37), and positioned in a location facing the transport rollers (31, 37) with a transport path (24) interposed therebetween; and a magnetic sensor substrate (34A) for controlling the magnetism detection unit (26), positioned between the tension roller (33) and the tension roller (39), and affixed in a manner such that the planar direction thereof intersects the paper money transport direction. |
