An elevator installation (1) and method to passively and reliably generate electrical energy while an elevator installation (1) is in operation. The elevator installation (1) comprises an elevator car (2), a tension member (6) for supporting and moving the elevator car, and a pulley (14; 18) engaging with the tension member wherein piezoelectric elements (20) are applied to or embedded within the tension member (6). As the tension member (6) is driven to move the elevator car (2) up and down along an elevator hoistway (12) it also engages with the rotating pulley ( 14; 18). Force imparted to the tension member during this engagement with the pulley is transmitted to the piezoelectric elements (20) which consequently generate electrical energy. |
