An organic EL element according to the present invention sequentially comprises a positive electrode, a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer and a negative electrode in this order, and is characterized in that: the hole transport layer contains an arylamine compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein each one of Ar1-Ar4 represents a monovalent aromatic hydrocarbon group or a monovalent aromatic heterocyclic group); and the light emitting layer contains an N-aromatic group substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound.
