PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical formulation for topical application comprising benzoyl peroxide which hardly causes skin irritation.SOLUTION: An aqueous gel formulation comprises water, a water-miscible organic solvent, a gelling agent and benzoyl peroxide. The concentration of the water-miscible organic solvent is sufficient to provide a stable suspension of benzoyl peroxide in the aqueous gel formulation without the inclusion of a surfactant in the formulation, in which the concentration of benzoyl peroxide in the formulation is 1.0% to 5.0% (w/w).
