A method for manufacturing a shaped aluminium container wherein the container is necked and/or expanded by dies. The necking or expanding steps may be carried out by a series of dies to achieve the desired dimensions. Each necking die consists of a necking surface (10) and a relief (20), the necking surface reduces the diameter of the container and the relief (20) has an internal diameter larger than the internal diameter of the narrowest portion (13) of the necking surface to reduce friction. The expanding die is of similar construction, with an undercut surface following the expanding portion, the undercut surface having an outer diameter less than the largest outer diameter of the expanding portion. These die are designed for use on a container with sidewalls which have a varying thickness of at least 0.001 inches. |
